How do carbon filters work?

Carbon filters effectively eliminate contaminants by utilizing the process of adsorption. Just like a sponge absorbs water, absorption captures particles and binds particles to a surface, much like Velcro. The surface of a carbon filter attracts and holds organic compounds because both water and contaminants are polar compounds that mutually attract each other.

Due to their high porosity and extensive surface area, carbon filters excel at eliminating unpleasant tastes, odors, and various particles present in water. A carbon filter has microscopic pores that trap contaminants as water flows through. These microscopic pores are measured in microns, and the smaller the micron, the more precise the filtration becomes. By maintaining a low flow rate and pressure, contaminants are given ample time to park or adhere to the carbon. The longer the contact time between water and the carbon filter's surface, the more efficient the filtration process becomes.

The primary benefit of using a carbon filter is its ability to eliminate chlorine, which can negatively impact the taste and quality of your food, beverages, and drinking water. Additionally, chlorine releases a gas that you may breathe in while showering. While chlorine does not adhere to carbon, a carbon filter effectively removes it through a chemical reaction. The use of activated catalytic carbon chemically alters the chlorine molecules converting them to a chloride.
